This festival, which has been designated as an intangible folk cultural asset of Wakayama Prefecture, begins at 1:00 pm on April 15 every year. Departed souls are transferred to the portable shrine at Kumano Hongu Shrine, and it is carried through the streets to the sound of drumming and people chanting Shinto prayers. After stopping at Manai Shrine, Shinto rites such as the Yamato-mai, Saotome-mai, Otaue-mai and Yasabaki ritual dances are performed at the old shrine of Oyunohara. After that, the Daigoma devotions and rice cake casting ceremonies are performed by local Shinto practitioners. They say that if you can get one of the peach blossoms that are handed out during the procession, you will have a year free from illness and disaster, and a bountiful harvest.
