This is a type of pilgrim's hat, the secret of which is said to have been passed down by an ascetic long ago in the Minachi district of Hongu-cho. Prior to that, the hats were woven by fleeing Heike warriors who lived secretly in Okukumano. As time went by, the hats came to be popular with people on pilgrimages to Kumano. Nowadays they are made by Yasuo Shiba and his wife. The Minachi-gasa has been designated as a traditional craft product by the governor of Wakayama Prefecture because of the traditional techniques used to make it, and its simple, beautifully textured cypress wood.
