After entering Chikatsuyu on Route 311, you will soon find a small hill to the north of the road. Adjoining this sunlit public cemetery is the grave of the Nonagase family. There are 54 five-storied pagodas and six Hokyoin pagodas at this grave dedicated to the warriors who defended the Southern Dynasty, which has been designated as a cultural asset of Wakayama Prefecture. During the conflict between the Northern and Southern Courts, Prince Otonomiya-moriyoshi, a son of Emperor Godiago who had been exiled to Oki, fled to Kumano. It is said that he was aided by the army of Nonagase Rokuro and Shichiro, a provincial samurai from Chikatsuyu. The five-storied pagodas were burned down by Hideyoshi's forces but were excavated after World War Two.
