The tendai uyaku of Asuka Shrine

Shinmeto-gyoshiki is a rite held the day before the Mifune-matsuri festival as part of the Kumano Hayatama Taisha annual festival. Enshrined in a sacred horse, Hayatama-okami travels in a procession to a temporary shrine known as "Sugi-no-okarimiya" in Otabisho. Then, by the light of flaming torches, a special offering of food and drink called omitama is offered in an ancient rite. The rite has been designated as an intangible folklore cultural asset of the prefecture.
