As you head from Koyazaka to Shingu, you will see the beautiful Ojigahama Beach. Right at the bottom of the hill a massive rock rising up from the sea will come into view. This place is called Mitarai. In the olden days people would rinse themselves with cold water here to purify themselves before praying to Shinto and Buddhist deities. The beach that stretches from Mitarai to Oji Shrine (Hama Oji) is Ojigahama Beach, and it was part of the old Kumano pilgrimage route until the new road was made in the Edo period. Also called the Ohama Coast, it is known as a place where loggerhead sea turtles lay their eggs.
