Kumanogawa Kawabune Center
In olden times pilgrims to Kumano Sanzan shrines - Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha and Kumano Nachi Taisha - would continue on their way to Shingu and Nachi by boat after worshipping at Hongu. In September 2005, the ""river pilgrimage route"" was revived with the Kumano River kawabune kudari. The ride in a simple wooden Japanese-style boat will evoke thoughts of the Heian pilgrims. Between March and November, kawabune boats make their way downstream from the river beach below the roadside station ""Dorokyokaido Kumanogawa"" to the river beach at Kumano Hayatama Taisha, travelling a distance of 16 km. A member of the Kumano Kodo Kataribe (storyteller) will accompany you in the boat as a guide.
