It is said that the snake-shaped guardian deity of children known as Jagata Jizo was located at Iwagami Pass prior to the great flood of 1889. Apparently, people on their way to and from Kumano were often possessed by a languid feeling at this pass and collapsed. Given the frequency of such incidents, a Jizo statue was erected at Iwagami Pass during the Kansei era to protect travelers from disaster. We are told that a mysterious sound was heard from Iwagami Pass at the time of the great flood. The villagers made their escape and were saved from disaster. The Jizo statue was then brought to its present location and enshrined.
