Yukawa-oji is situated at the foot of Iwagami Pass in a valley from which the headwaters of the Yukawa River flow. Many pilgrims lodged or took a break here, and there was also accommodation for the imperial family and nobility.
Tradition has it that Yukawa was home to an individual of the same name who, based in the Gobo Plains, was a power in Kinan during the Warring States era. When Kitano-dono, the concubine of Ashikaga-Yoshimitsu, made a pilgrimage in 1427, she was welcomed and given an escort by a party of warriors from the clan of Okuyukawa.
