Mikoshi Pass

Content Number:20709

Mikoshi Pass
Mikoshi Pass is on the boundary between Kuchikumano and Okukumano, where pilgrims who came to pray at Kumano Hongu Taisha crossed from Yukawa-oji in the west to Otonashi River in the east. It is from Mikoshi-toge Pass that pilgrims to Kumano get their first sight of the Otonashi River as it flows towards Hongu. It is said that in medieval times a checkpoint where tolls were levied was located here, along with those at Kuki and Yagio Valley in Hongu. We are told there was also a teahouse here from the Edo period to around the beginning of the Taisho period.
