Funatama-jinja, a shrine to the god of boats, is located just past the Akakigoe junction on the way to Inohara-oji from Mikoshi Pass. Long, long ago there was a waterfall called Tamataki and, while a god was bathing in the basin beneath it, there was a sudden downpour of torrential rain. A spider that was floating in the basin was about to be drowned by the heavy rain but, seeing this, the god threw it a sakaki leaf. The spider clambered onto the leaf, and using its legs like oars, rowed its way safely to land. The sight of this inspired the god to make a dugout canoe from a camphor tree.
