The name Hosshinmon refers to a gateway to release a heart that is devoted to the Buddhist path. With their sights fixed on Kumano Hongu Taisha, the Kumano pilgrims made their resolve to approach Shintoism and Buddhism as they passed through the torii arch of this oji shrine. Hosshinmon-oji is counted as one of the five special ojis among the 99 Kumano ojis, although it was enshrined at Misato Shrine in 1907 and its shrine building was also moved there. The current shrine building was reconstructed in 1990.
