Fushiogami-oji: Stone Monument to Izumi-Shikibu
When Izumi-Shikibu approached Fushiogami-oji on her pilgrimage to Kumano she suddenly began to menstruate. She recited a poem, thinking that she would not be able to worship at the shrine.
"My physical condition is like clouds all over the sky, hiding the moonlight behind them. It is sad not to be able to offer my prayers because of my menstruation."
That night Kumano Gongen appeared in a dream saying, "Deities, who are a part of everything including the impure, can clear away menstruation too", and Shikibu was able to worship at the shrine.
This tale was told by followers of High Priest Ippen who used Izumi-Shikibu as an illustration to demonstrate that Kumano Gongen "does not enquire about faith or rank, or loathe female impurity".
