Unlike the other oji shrines, which were places for the Kumano pilgrims to rest or stay overnight, this is thought to have been a place of purification where pilgrims could rid themselves of the dust from their journey, groom themselves and smarten up their attire immediately before worshipping at Kumano Hongu Taisha. It stands alone and silent, protected by mighty Japanese yews.
