Monument to Johannes Knudsen
In February of 1957 (year 32 of the Showa era) Dane Johannes Knudsen (39 years old at the time), chief engineer of a ship, found a Japanese ship on fire off the coast of the Hinomisaki Lighthouse, where wind blow at speeds of up to 20m in the harsh winter and tried to help nearby Japanese sailors, but the Japanese sailor, weakened, fell into the harsh winter water and Knudsen dove in afterwards to try and save him.
However his drowned body was found on the coast of Hidaka town the next day.
A memorial and bust were erected on the grounds of Hinomisaki in honor of his bravery.
