Kirime-oji Shrine is one of the ninety-nine satellite shrines of the Kumano Kodo.
It is one of the Gotai Oji of the ninety-nine satellite shrines of the Kumano Kodo along with Fujishiro-oji Shrine, Inabane-oji Shrine, Takijiri-oji Shrine and Hosshinmon-oji Shrine.
A Futokorogami (paper used for writing tanka poems) written by the former emperor Gotoba at the poetry session he held there still exists and is called the "Kirime Futokorogami", a national treasure.
It is a very old building contemporary of Senri-oji Shrine and Minabe-oji Shrine.
When visiting by car the shrine is located on the mountain side of the Y intersection about 500m north of Kirime River on National Highway 42.
