The Suga Shrine is a shrine which received its invocation of divinities from the Kyoto Gion Goryogu (the present Yasaka Shrine) in the Heian era.
The style of architecture is the Kasuga Shrine style and the Chinese vermillion main shrine is quite vivid. The shrine has been named a cultural asset of Wakayama prefecture.
An annual celebration is held on October 9 and just as the horse statues in the temple interior suggest there are umakake and yabusame (horseback archery) activities as well as shishimai (lion dances) making the celebrations quite lively.
