Content Number:20833

Kumano Kodo (Senri-oji Shrine)
Senri-oji Shrine is one of the ninety-nine satellite shrines of the Kumano Kodo.
There are records which state it was built during the Enryaku years of the Heian era (782-806).
The current main shrine was rebuilt in 1776 (year 5 of the Anei era) and is a very old building contemporary of Kirime-oji Shrine and Minabe-oji Shrine.
Because it is said there was a tradition of offering seashells in worship it is also know as the "Kai (seashell)-no-oji".
