Said to have been built in 898 (the first year of the Shotai era), it is know as one of Wakayama prefecture's historic, old (pedigreed) temples.
There is a white daruma statue, the largest in Japan, that was built in 1973 (year 48 of the Showa era) which was selected as one of the most famous 8 daruma in Japan, which is why the temple is more commonly known as "Darumadera Temple".
There are also 100 old documents known as the "Kozen-ji Temple Documents" which allow visitors to really get a sense of the history of the temple.
