Walking Around Atagi-so (Ruins of the Atagi Castle)
Atagi Castle, a flatland castle, was constructed by the Atagi clan around 1528 near Atagi Bridge, the first bridge upstream from the Hiki River Bridge.
The Ataka clan led the famous Kumano navy at the battle of Dan-no-Ura on the side of the Genji and helped to build the structure for an entire era.
The clan disappeared because of succession problems, and this dispute caused them to lose all of their power.
At present the private homes show only a small portion of the original splendor in the form of the remaining stone walls.
