Engetsu-to Island

Content Number:20910

Engetsu-to Island
Engetsu-to Island could be said to be the symbol of Shirahama.
A small island floating in the southern ocean off the coast, 35m from east to west and 130m north to south in size.
Its proper name is "Takashima".
The reason it is called Engetsu-to (full moon island) is its shape.
There is a circular hole in the middle of the island, created by wind and wave erosion which has led to the island being livingly called "Engetsu-to".
The sun sets directly behind the island so that it appears to fit within the hole of Engetsu-to Island several times throughout the year.
Selected as one of the "100 Best Sunrises and Sunsets in Wakayama Prefecture" for the beauty of the sparkling red sky and sea during a sunset.
