Kyoto University Shirahama Aquarium is a facility of the Kyoto University Field Science Education and Research Center Seto Marine Biological Laboratory and was opened to the public in 1930.
It is the only aquarium owned by a national university in Japan, and has a long history as it looks forward to its 80th anniversary.
Among its exhibits, the invertebrate displays, including coral, shrimp, crabs and starfish, is the best in Japan.
A wide variety of sealife is on display in the 250 ton large scale tank and solar insolation tanks, its impressive scientific content also adds to the aquariums popularity.
